How to play Tangram

Take a moment with Tangram before moving to another game. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
