How to play Peg Solitaire

Take a moment with Peg Solitaire before moving to another game. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Focus on one rule

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
