How to play Nim

Nim gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Focus on one rule

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Remove the last counter on the board to win. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

If only one counter remains in one heap, taking it wins under the normal-play rule used here. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Check the rule before repeating the action. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
